If we can trust the latest reports, the old GX will finally get a redesign in the next year. The current generation has been around since 2009 and it will be replaced with the 2024 model year. This clearly indicates that the 2023 Lexus GX will represent the final production year of the current generation, so it’s hard to believe that bigger changes could happen. This should be a typical carryover model, with familiar design and features.
Despite the age, the current generation still has a lot of great things to offer. Of course, the first thing that comes to mind is excellent off-road performance but this SUV is much more than that. It also offers a quite comfortable ride, excellent interior quality, lots of standard equipment etc. However, also shows some clear signs of ageing, starting from outdated aesthetics, thirsty engine etc.
As there are no bigger changes to come, we expect that the 2023 Lexus GX will hit the market sometime in the last quarter of the year.
2023 Lexus GX Design
As we’ve just mentioned, this will most likely be the final model year of the generation. Therefore, we don’t expect to see any bigger changes. We expect to see a familiar design, which is heavily based on the current-generation Land Cruiser Prado. The two models shared most of the mechanics, as well as the cabin design. On the other hand, the GX comes with a little bit different aesthetics, based on the brand’s contemporary design language.
Of course, off-road performances are the strongest point of this SUV. All models come standard with full-time four-wheel drive, as well as with things like center locking differential, high and low gearing, downhill assist control and hill-start assist control. Also, you get an advanced Kinetic Dynamics suspension system, along with the adaptive variable suspension. Furthermore, you can also opt for the off-road package, which adds goodies like Multi-Terrain Select, Multi-Terrain Monitor with 4 cameras, transmission cooler, fuel-tank protector, crawl control and many more.
Interior
The current-generation GX has been around for more than a decade and the cabin design clearly shows that. The dashboard looks a little bit old but, on the other hand, the build quality is excellent. The materials are super fine, the attention to detail is amazing, and the overall feel of quality is at an impressive level. All this comes in a combination with great sound insulation and super comfortable seats.
Speaking of seating, the front and the second-row seats are very generous with space and accommodate adults with ease. On the other hand, the third row is pretty tight, due to the relatively short wheelbase. For the same reason, the cargo capacity is barely average for the class. You may count on about 11.6 cubic feet of space behind the third row, 46.7 cubic feet behind the second row and 65 cubic feet of the total cargo volume.
Features
Once again, we don’t expect bigger changes, especially after the 2022 update, which has brought new tech features. So, base models should come standard with goodies like dual-zone climate control, proximity keyless entry, moonroof, a 10.3-inch touch screen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, a nine-speaker stereo, voice recognition, Bluetooth, satellite radio, HD Radio, a Wi-Fi hot spot, four USB ports, and navigation. Additionally, there should be upgrades like tri-zone climate control, a 17-speaker Mark Levinson premium stereo etc.
When it comes to safety features, all models should come standard with goodies like forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, rear-seat reminder, rearview camera and more.
2023 Lexus GX Engine
Under the hood, the 2023 Lexus GX will continue with a good-old 4.6-liter V8, which puts out around 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque. The engine comes coupled with a 6-speed automatic transmission, which works pretty well. The whole system feels smooth and refined while driving dynamics are also pretty decent.
However, the price you have to pay for the great engine note is poor fuel economy. This is one of the thirstiest models in the class, which returns no more than 15 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway. When properly equipped, this SUV can tow up to 6.500 pounds.
2023 Lexus GX Release Date and Price
We expect that the 2023 Lexus GX will arrive sometime in the last quarter of the year, with a starting price of around 56.000 dollars.
