After the recent facelift, we are pretty sure that the 2022 VW Atlas will arrive without more important changes. Simply, the recent update has brought a lot of interesting novelties and we believe that the current generation will remain in the same form for another couple of years when we are about to see a complete overhaul. The recent update has brought a new styling, new drivetrain options and more standard equipment, so it’s hard to expect anything new for the next year.

This means you may count on a crossover that has a lot of good things to offer. We particularly like its spacious and quiet cabin, while the ride and maneuverability are pretty good for a vehicle of this size. Add to this a solid interior quality and a relatively long list of standard equipment and it becomes obvious why this 7-seated is a great choice as a family hauler. However, it isn’t without flaws. We don’t like the cabin design, which may be spacious but look uninspiring. Also, engine options are nothing more than okay, while the ride can be harsh sometimes. We expect to see the 2022 VW Atlas sometime in the last quarter of 2021.

2022 VW Atlas

2022 VW Atlas Design

In terms of base design characteristics, this large SUV definitely won’t change. It rides on a familiar MQB platform and it is actually by far the biggest vehicle that uses this architecture. The suspension is rather on a firm side, so you may feel some bumps on pawn roads. On the other side, such a setup ensures good maneuverability and surprisingly good handling for a vehicle of this size. This definitely isn’t a too boring vehicle to drive, such as similarly-sized Chevy Traverse, though it’s no way near Mazda CX-9 sportiness.

When it comes to the styling, the recent update brought new front and rear ends, though the overall layout still remains not particularly attractive. It’s neither rough, nor stylish, but rather conservative. The optional R-Line package makes things slightly better, with nicer and bigger wheels, new front fascia and several more exclusive details.4

On the inside, the 2022 VW Atlas will remain a mixed bag. While the build quality is solid, the presence of so much plastics and generally extremely dull dashboard design makes this crossover look not so appealing from the inside, especially when compared to models like Mazda CX-9 and several more models in the class.

2022 VW Atlas Interior

On the other side, the aspect where this model really shines is the amount of interior space and, of course, the 2022 VW Atlas will continue in the same way. You may count on three very spacious rows of seats, where even the third row accommodates adults with ease. The cargo area is also among the most generous in the segment. You may count on about 20.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind its third-row seats, 55.5 cubic feet with these seats folded down, and nearly 97 with the second row down.

Additions of new standard equipment are typical for every model year so the 2022 Atlas shouldn’t be any different. Still, we are pretty sure that most of the things are about to remain the same. Therefore, the list of standard equipment should remain pretty much the same as in the current model, which comes standard with tech goodies like a 6.5-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a USB port, Bluetooth, and a six-speaker stereo system.

Additionally, you can get things like an 8-inch touch screen, navigation, HD Radio, satellite radio, a 12-speaker Fender sound system, up to five USB ports, automatic climate control, and the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit.

2022 VW Atlas Engines

Under the hood, things will definitely remain the same for the 2022 VW Atlas. Base models will carry on with a 2.0-liter turbo-four, which is now available with all-wheel-drive as well. It delivers around 235 horsepower, which seems decent enough for most drivers. Those who are looking for something peppier can pick an optional V6. We are talking about VW’s familiar 3.6-liter unit, which puts around 276 horsepower. Both engines come in pair with 8-speed automatic transmission.

When it comes to fuel economy, the base turbo-four is a better choice, as you may presume. It returns around 21 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. The optional V6 returns around 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway.

2022 VW Atlas release date

2022 VW Atlas Release Date and Price

As we don’t expect bigger changes for the 2022 VW Atlas, we also expect that the launch date will be scheduled for a typical time of year, sometime in the last quarter of 2021. Price changes are not expected so base versions should go around 33.000 dollars. The competition in the segment is tough. Some of the key players are models like Toyota Highlander and Ford Explorer, though most experts see Chevy Traverse as the Atlas’ key competitor.
