According to the latest reports, the next generation of Volvo’s mid-size SUV will come in 2022, as the 2023 model. This clearly indicates that the next year probably won’t bring any significant novelties. We are pretty sure that this refers to the 2022 Volvo XC90 Recharge. Not so long ago, the company introduced the “Recharge” nameplate to the lineup, even though we are talking about a plug-in hybrid system that has been available for years. In any case, we don’t expect to see bigger changes for the next year.
This means that you may count on a familiar layout, which has a lot of great things to offer. What we like about this model is a luxurious cabin, capable powertrain and plenty of interior space. Also, the list of standard equipment is very long. On the other side, the hybrid system isn’t the most refined you can find on the market.
As there are no significant changes to come, we presume that the 2022 Volvo XC90 Recharge will hit the market sometime late in the year.
2022 Volvo XC90 Recharge Design
In terms of the overall design, the 2022 Volvo XC90 Recharge won’t be any different compared to the current model. This plug-in hybrid version features the same overall design as the rest of the lineup. The current generation has been around since 2014 and despite the age, it still offers a respectable driving experience, especially if you pick more expensive versions with adaptive air suspension.
When it comes to styling, not many changes have changed during these seven years of production. Still, there was a facelift a few years ago. We saw a couple of tweaks at the front, as well as things like new wheels, colors and few more details. The 2022 Volvo XC90 Recharge might get a new color option or two, but anything more than that would be a real surprise.
The same thing goes for interior design. Despite the age, this cabin still looks very nice. Moreover, the materials and build quality are still among the best in the class. Typically for Volvo models, seats are massive and comfortable, while the driving position is very good, whether it’s about ergonomics or visibility.
With 117.5 inches in wheelbase, it’s no wonder that this model offers plenty of passenger space. The first row offers nearly 41 inches of legroom, while the second row is good for 37. The third row around 32 inches of legroom, which seems enough to accommodate average-sized adults. This model is available in two seating configurations, either as a 6- or 7-seater.
When it comes to the cargo area, you may count on about 15.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind its third-row seats, 41.8 cubic feet with these seats folded, and 85.7 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded. That’s more compared to most rivals in the class.
We don’t expect that the 2022 Volvo XC90 Recharge will be much different in terms of trim level organization but a few novelties could come. Unlike gasoline models, this version is not available in the base Momentum trim. The offer starts with the R-Design model, which means that you may count on things like genuine leather upholstery, heated front seats with additional thigh and lumbar support, metal interior accents, a 14-speaker Harman Kardon stereo, and 20-inch wheels. Also, the R-Design is available with heated rear seats, a 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins stereo, and hands-free park assist on the list of standard equipment.
A higher-grade model comes with the Inscription nameplate, and adds things like ash wood trim and perforated leather upholstery, while you can also pay extra for massaging seats.
2022 Volvo XC90 Recharge Powertrain
The 2022 Volvo XC90 Recharge will continue in the same way when it comes to the powertrain. This means that you may count on Volvo’s familiar T8 system, which combines a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor. The total output goes around 400 horsepower, which is enough to provide pretty solid performance. Also, the system comes in pair with an 8-speed automatic transmission, which also does a pretty fine job.
The powertrain is pretty capable, though we can’t say it’s the most refined hybrid system around. For example, the Lexus RX 450h offers a much smoother transition between different drive modes and even offers better fuel economy. Speaking of the fuel economy, the 2022 Volvo XC90 Recharge plug-in hybrid returns around 27 mpg combined, while you may also count on 18 miles in the EV mode.
2022 Volvo XC90 Recharge Release Date and Price
Since bigger changes probably won’t happen, we presume that the 2022 Volvo XC90 Recharge will arrive sometime late in the year. The starting price should go around 64.000 dollars.
