The current generation of Land Rover’s mid-size luxury SUV has been around since 2013. By today’s industry standards, that’s a pretty long time, so it’s no wonder that the British carmaker is working on the replacement. The next generation has been in testing for some time and we already saw it a couple of times. Each time, it had a camouflage, so it’s hard to talk about things like styling or interior design. On the other side, we could speculate about those more general things, such as platform, powertrain and overall layout.
At this point, we know for sure it will get a completely new architecture, which will be all about electrification. We are about to see several hybrids and probably an electrified version too. However, we also count on at least one gasoline engine in the offer. Also, we hope that the new model will offer more space for passengers in the third row.
2022 Range Rover Sport Redesign
Many things have changed since the current generation of Range Rover Sport arrived in the market. This particularly refers to the segment of electrification, so it’s no wonder that we count on all kinds of alternative powertrain options in the new model. For all that, you need a new platform first and JLR has already developed one that will underprint both the 2022 Range Rover Sport and the full-size Range Rover.
At this point, we don’t know too much about the platform but we know for sure that the British carmaker will serve a big portion of electrified powertrain options to us, including an all-electric version
When it comes to the exterior design, the testing model has already been spotted a couple of times. Although it still wears a camouflage, it clearly shows the basic contour and it’s easy to see that the overall shape won’t significantly change. When it comes to the styling, we expect mostly evolutionary changes, though JLR will probably implement the new design language, presented in the new Defender. This means a slightly rugged appearance, though most of the design solutions will rather come with evolutionary changes.
Naturally, we count on a completely new chassis and suspension setup. From what we know so far, the chassis will benefit from the more massive use of lightweight materials, such as aluminum and HSS. The company claims the new 2022 Range Rover Sport will be even more rigid, despite the weight reduction.
Currently, this is the only Range Rover that offers three rows of seats. The seven-seater version is optional. However, it isn’t particularly passenger-friendly. Moreover, the access to the third row is extremely tough, while the amount of legroom is very small and can only accommodate small kids.
Therefore, we count on notable improvements in this aspect. It’s still unclear whether the new 2022 Range Rover Sport is about to feature a longer wheelbase than the current model (115.1 inches), but we definitely count on some reorganization of the interior space and more room for the sixth and seventh passenger.
When it comes to the overall cabin design, we don’t expect surprises. The new model should carry on with the traditional LR design approach, which means mostly conservative aesthetics but excellent build quality. Also, we count on a full-load of tech features, including a new infotainment system, digital instrument screen etc.
2022 Range Rover Sport Powertrain
As we already mentioned, the new 2022 Range Rover Sport will be mostly about electrification. The current generation already offers a plug-in hybrid version. It is based on a 2.0-liter turbo-four engine and puts out around 400 horsepower. Most likely, it will carry on with some power increase. We count on one more PHEV version, which would be less powerful and a kind of alternative to the current turbodiesel, as well as on an all-electric model. The latter won’t be ready for the initial launch but we expect to see it by 2023.
However, all this doesn’t mean that the new generation won’t be available with a version that runs on pure gasoline. The latest reports suggest that the new model will use BMW’s familiar 4.4-liter V8, which will replace JLR’s current 5.0-liter Supercharged V8. Base versions will be good for about 500 horsepower, but we also count on a more powerful, SVT-badged version.
The diesel version won’t be in the offer anymore.
2022 Range Rover Sport Release Date and Price
The testing model has been around for a while, so we expect that the 2022 Range Rover Sport will hit the market already in the second half of this year, though details about the price are still unknown. The current model starts at around 70.000 dollars. The competition in the segment is tough and includes models like Porsche Cayenne, Maserati Levante, Mercedes-Benz GLE etc.
