Despite the rumors, the 2022 Lexus GX460 redesign won’t happen. Those are the latest reports we are getting from our reliable sources about the SUV that has been around for nearly 12 years. Simply, the Japanese manufacturer is currently quite busy with other models, such as the new Tundra or LX, while there is also a brand-new flagship crossover on the way. On the other side, this mid-size BoF still makes pretty respectable numbers, so there is no need to rush.

All this clearly indicates that there are no bigger changes to come for the next year. We are about to see a familiar design, which hasn’t significantly changed for all these years of production. Of course, smaller updates in terms of new features are always possible, but the vast majority of things are about to remain the same, especially in areas like styling, mechanics, powertrain etc. Therefore, we don’t expect that the 2022 Lexus GX460 will be scheduled for any earlier date than usual.

2022 Lexus GX460 changes

2022 Lexus GX460 Design

Just like we mentioned, the base design will certainly remain the same. Despite that there were several updates during this long production cycle, we are still talking about a model that has been around since 2009. It still shares most of its design characteristics with the Land Cruiser Prade, which is sold around the globe. The two models ride on the same chassis and feature a lot of visual similarities. However, the LX comes with a different front face, based on the company’s latest design language, with the famous spindle grille layout.

All in all, we don’t expect that the next year’s model will bring any particular novelty, not even in terms of new color options and other minor updates. Still, keep in mind that this could easily be the last model year of the current generation, which means some special edition could be offered.

Once again, there are no bigger changes to come. The 2022 Lexus GX460 interior will keep the same layout, which has both good and bad sides. On one side, the overall quality is really impressive, whether it’s about materials or build quality. In this aspect, we are talking about a typical Lexus, though the aesthetics may look outdated to some, as most physical controls have remained over the years. More conservative drivers will definitely like such a layout.

2022 Lexus GX460 Interior

When it comes to the interior space, this model measures nearly 110 inches in wheelbase. Given the size, the amount of space isn’t as generous as in some modern crossovers in the segments. Simply, this model tends to keep a good balance between interior space and off-road performances, where too long wheelbase definitely isn’t a good thing.

Another complaint goes to the cargo area, which is one of the smallest in the segment. You may count on just 11.6 cubic feet of cargo space with the third row up, 46.7 cubic feet with the third row folded, and 64.7 cubic feet with the second row folded.

Novelties in this aspect are always possible but we don’t expect to see too many of them in the 2022 Lexus GX460. Still, we hope Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will finally become available. On the other side, the rest of the things are expected to remain pretty much the same. This means a list of standard features that includes goodies like an 8-inch touch screen, nine speakers, Amazon Alexa capability, voice command, Bluetooth, four USB ports, and HD Radio. In higher trim levels, we also count on things like navigation, the Lexus Enform App Suite, and a 17-speaker Mark Levinson premium audio system.

2022 Lexus GX460 Engine

Things under the hood will certainly remain the same and this may seem like the last chance for driving enthusiasts to get a V8 engine in a vehicle of this size. While most rivals rely either on V6 engines or even smaller turbo-four units, this one still sticks with a good-old 4.6-liter V8, which may not be as efficient and peppy, but definitely makes some pretty amazing noise. Also, it runs extremely smooth, even though the 6-speed automatic transmission may feel not particularly precise.

On the other side, the obvious drawback is fuel economy, which is among the lowest in the segment. You may count on just 15 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway. Still, keep in mind that 4×4 is standard and that this SUV offers pretty impressive off-road performances, even though it’s very luxurious. The list of standard equipment includes things like a transmission cooler, crawl control, and a Multi-Terrain Monitor, as well as a Multi-Terrain Select system that offers several drive modes.
