The current generation of the legendary SUV has been around for about 9 years and it’s about time to see some big changes. The new generation is in works and it looks like it will finally hit the market sometime in the next year, as the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee. We count on a full load of novelties, including not just visual and mechanical upgrades, but even some more substantial tweaks, including the overall layout.
Speaking of more substantial changes, this particularly refers to the seating capacity. It looks like we are finally about to see the third row in this mid-size SUV and we have no doubt that this will have a highly positive effect on the model’s popularity. Other than that, you may count on a new platform, as well as on a completely new design, both outside and on the inside. On the other side, we probably won’t see too many changes under the hood. When it comes to the launch date, we expect to see a 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee unveiling sometime in the next year, though anything more precise is yet to come.
2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Redesign
When it comes to the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee redesign, one of the first things that come to mind is the platform. If we consider that the current generation features almost a decade-old design, it’s clear that it doesn’t ride as some much younger rivals. Fortunately, FCA has already a prepared platform for this occasion, which will drastically improve handling, ride quality and overall experience. Of course, we are talking about Alfa Romeo’s Giorgio platform, which already underprints the compact Stelvio.
For this occasion, we will see a significant stretching and we count on a couple of additional inches in wheelbase compared to the current model, which is good for nearly 115 inches. The new model will be bigger but it will also be notably lighter and more efficient.
Exterior
When it comes to the exterior design, it’s still early to talk about details. The testing model still wears a complete camouflage and the only thing we can say for sure is that the new model will feature a pretty similar overall shape. Also, it looks slightly bigger compared to the outgoing more, particularly in terms of wheelbase and overall length.
On the other side, we can only speculate about the styling at the moment. Naturally, the biggest changes will come to the front end but we don’t expect to see radical changes. The new styling should rather be evolutionary and we expect that Jeep designers will stick to classic design solutions that have always been characterizing this brand. Of course, this particularly refers to those famous vertical bars on the grille and rather conventional headlight design.
Interior
Some of the biggest changes that are about to come with this redesign are those in terms of cabin design. At this point, we don’t know much about the dashboard and the overall design, but we know for sure that the new cabin will be bigger and more spacious. This particularly refers to the passenger space, as the new model is finally about to come with the third row. At this point, we still don’t know if this is going to be a standard feature, or it will be offered as an option. In any case, the third row is finally coming.
On the other side, details about the dashboard are yet to come, as we already mentioned. Still, spy photographers already managed to catch some of the details, including the new touchscreen. It looks like the new 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee interior won’t feature the same 12-inch screen as Ram 1500, but rather a horizontally-oriented unit.
2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Engines
While there are all kinds of changes to come in various aspects, it looks like things won’t be much different under the hood. Most likely, the base model will carry on with a well-known 3.6-liter V6, though probably equipped with a mild hybrid system. Also, a turbo-four should be included in the offer as well, the same 2.0-liter unit that can be found under the hood of Wrangler. Those two engines will be ready for the initial launch. On the other side, V8 units will arrive a little bit later.
Of course, we are talking about familiar HEMI units. Three of them are currently in the offer and we expect all of them to carry on. This includes the monstrous 6.2-liter Hellcat unit with more than 700 horsepower. Eventually, we could see a diesel version in the offer once again, equipped with a familiar 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 unit.
When will 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee arrive?
At this point, it’s still early to talk about some more precise dates but we presume that the new model will hit the market sometime in the second half of 2021. When it comes to the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee price, we expect that base models will go around 35.000 dollars. With the additional third row, the new generation will have more rivals than before, including models like Ford Explorer, Kia Telluride etc.
