Changes inside the cockpit are also not too big. Volvo was focused on driver-assist features and options. However, designers are adding new upholstery, and the major change is a new six-seat layout. There are blind-spot monitoring, emergency brakes, and detection for pedestrians and other vehicles. Lane mitigation system is already installed in the XC60, and now it is time to show up in the larger SUV.
2020 Volvo XC90 Upgrades and New Hybrid Systems
T5, T6, and T8 are available configurations for the 2020 Volvo XC90. The last one is a famous hybrid system that delivered 400 hp and 472 lb-ft of torque. Now, the setup is even more efficient. A 2.0-liter petrol unit is still the heart of the system. Compared to its predecessor, the T8 can produce 20 ponies more.
That is not all about the 2020 Volvo XC90 drivetrains. Two new hybrids are on the way. T8 is a plug-in configuration. Now, D5 and D6 mild-hybrid systems are based on the T5 and T6 engines. We don’t know too much about them, except they will boost everything by 15 percent. So, the D5 outputs should be around 285 hp, 300 lb-ft, and 27 mpg combined, while the D6 produces 360 hp, 340 lb-ft, and 26 mpg average.

T5 is the base configuration for the D6 mild hybrid. A 2.0-liter turbo-four engine is capable to burst 250 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. Start/stop system boosts fuel economy and the 2020 Volvo XC90 returns 20/27 mpg with the AWD system. It is optional setup, while the base model pairs turbo engine with front-wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The other solution is T6. The same 2.0-l engine is supercharged for 315 hp and 295 lb-ft of twits. The same transmission is redirecting power exclusively to all wheels. No 2WD is available with T6. The extra power doesn’t make the XC90 consume much more fuel – only 1 mpg on average. Drivers can set up drive modes to save fuel or to boost performance. Start/stop feature can be disabled. The 7-seat SUV has a towing capacity of 5,000 pounds.
When Will the 2020 Volvo XC90 be Available?
The pre-order of the 2020 Volvo XC90 already started. However, customers are not going to get their SUV until this fall. The production of the XC90 starts in May/June in its homeland. According to rumors, D5 and D6 hybrid models will arrive in the US later in 2020. Some say Volvo is not bringing these outside Europe. It would be a big disappointment.
How Much Is 2020 Volvo XC90 Going to Cost?
The base model of the upcoming XC90 will keep the current starting price. The MSRP of the 7-seat SUV is under $48,000. Upper trim levels with more options will cost more. Excellence is top of the class model with a six-digit price tag. The new model is getting more unique upgrades and even higher price. The new generation of the Volvo XC90 is coming in two or three years.
