Kia is putting a lot of effort into its new Telluride SUV. However, the company is not paying less attention to other models in the lineup. For example, there is no need for a big update of the 2020 Kia Sorento, since this SUV went through a redesign in 2018. Minor updates will be enough to keep this mid-size model fresh and attractive. Interior will get updates of the infotainment system, and the possible hybrid engine will be the major addition. The base model comes with a five-seat layout, while you can opt for a third row and 7-seat SUV.

Sorento arrived back in 2002 when it was a compact SUV. Now, it is much larger. Only the latest generation grew for around 95 mm compared to the previous, second series. This size increase allowed the designers to install the third row of seats and make the SUV a family vehicle. The 2020 Kia Sorento is also going to offer a very attractive price. Main rivals of the Korean vehicle are Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, and Ford Edge.

When Does The 2020 Kia Sorento Come Out?

The new 2020 Kia Sorento is not coming out this year. The focus is on Telluride full-size 8-seat SUV. However, the Korean company is going to improve its smaller vehicle and launch next year. We believe that Kia is delaying the release date intentionally, so they can buy some time and develop a hybrid drivetrain. Well, it is not a surprise, since this company is one of the fastest-growing carmakers in the automotive industry. So, the new Sorento could debut at the next year’s auto show in Detroit, which is moved for summer.

The price of the 2020 Kia Sorento depends on the engine type and trim level. The SUV will definitely appear with the 3.3l engine as an upper trim that costs at least $32,000. The base model is using a four-cylinder inline-four drivetrain and carries the price tag of $28,000. Hybrid is definitely getting the tag over $30,000. Top of the line model is SX Limited edition with a V6 engine. It will cost nearly $50,000.

2020 Kia Sorento Specs

So, the new 2020 Kia Sorento continues to use a four-pot engine as the base solution. That is a 2.4-liter naturally-aspirated unit with the capability to burst 185 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission sends power to front wheels. All-wheel drive is optional. The fuel economy of the new Sorento will reach 30 mpg on the highway, while the towing capacity is 2,000 pounds.

If you need more hauling potential, then you should consider a 3.3 V6 engine. The new SUV will be able to produce 290 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque. Towing capacity raises to 5,000 pounds, but the cost is higher consumption. Sorento with this setup returns 22 mpg combined. All-wheel drive model is even thirstier. Well, the fuel economy could be even worse if the company didn’t add an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Hybrid Rumors

Another engine option for the next season will be a hybrid. Well, Kia is going to electrify its main models, including Sorento and Sportage SUVs, and Sedona minivan. Still, we don’t know which unit is going to pair an electric battery to improve overall performance. We believe that will be a V6. Toyota Highlander also offers four- and six-cylinder engines, and the larger one is a base for a hybrid setup. Electric motors will boost the power output over 300 horsepower, while the fuel economy is getting a significant increase. We could see the rating for the urban condition at the same level as on the highway. That means the 2020 Kia Sorento Hybrid could return 26 mpg. Still, the company needs to confirm this, and we will wait for its premiere probably for another year or so.

2020 Kia Sorento Changes For the Next Season

The new 2020 Kia Sorento is not going to introduce any serious upgrade for the next edition. After the redesign in 2018, there is no need for it. Well, the company managed to sell again over 100k units, after bad 2017 season. Hybrid will boost sales even further. But, it will need the latest technologies. We still don’t know if this kind of drivetrain is going to power the 7-seat SUV. However, with a ground clearance of 7.3 inches, the SUV will be capable of doing some off-road challenges.

The cockpit of the 7-seat SUV could suffer bigger changes. Well, designers are trapped here – they can offer more space for passengers by cutting cargo room, or vice versa. However, comfort and safety come first. On the other hand, sliding and foldable seats can provide more storage space if there is no need for all seven-seat spots. Info-entertaining system of the new 2020 Kia Sorento will bring more options. Some of the standard features are keyless entry, 7-inch screen, rear-view camera, and of course Apple CarPlay/Android Auto systems. Leather seats are optional, as well as heating for the front row. A seven-seat SUV is also a cool addition if you have a big family. The larger display and premium audio are available as extras.
