The arrival of the new Ford Bronco still causes a lot of questions. What will it look like? What’s under the hood? How big it would be? The US carmaker is not giving the answers yet. But, the hint could be the discontinuation of the full-size SUV. The 2020 Ford Flex is the last edition of this stylish model, which could be replaced by Bronco.

With the production ending after 2020 Ford Flex, there are no reasons for the redesign, colors updates, engine revisits, or price modifications. What we saw on the Flex before, it will be available again.

Highlights of this 7-seater SUV are the cool look with the low stance that boosts overall driving impression. Although spacious, the interior hasn’t been updated for ages. Everything is old and the Flex can’t compete with other rivals delivering more comfortable cockpits with a lot of advanced options.

Well, safety and assist features are not so bad. Also, SYNC3 infotainment offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto services. Still, the audio system is subpar. The base engine is a V6 with 290 hp. That is far from enough for the full-size segment.

Redesign Should’ve Happened Years Ago

The new 2020 Ford Flex is definitely the final edition of the SUV and this model is not coming back any time soon. But, we could figure out that vehicle slipped down the pecking order in the lineup some while ago.

The last big redesign happened in 2013. Since 2016 rumors are swirling that SUV is going to be discontinued after 2020 YM. In 2018, Ford confirmed these stories. The minor update for 2019 Flex refreshed the hope the SUV will get a redesign and its production continues. Sorry, this is not going to happen.

2020 Ford Flex Specs, AWD, Towing Capacity

The base 2020 Ford Flex comes with a weak V6 engine. It produces 290 hp and 255 lb-ft of torque, but it is just not good enough for an SUV of this size. A six-speed automatic transmission is the power router. Most other SUVs in Ford’s lineup are already using newer gearboxes. Well, that is another update that needed to happen a long time ago.

The combination returns poor mileage, even with the front-wheel drive on. Some mid-size SUVs deliver more power and a better fuel economy. Optionally, the 2020 Ford Flex AWD can offer more fun for drive, as well as paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel.

The impression improves slightly with a turbocharged version of a 3.5-liter V6 engine. Still, it is not a twin-turbo system we see on the Expedition, with 450 horsepower. Regular turbo-six returns 365 hp and 350 lb-ft of twist. This one uses the AWD as the only drive, while the fuel economy is 17 mpg combined.

Trim Levels, Accessories, Colors

The 2020 Ford Flex is a three-row seven-seater SUV that offers 83 cubic feet of cargo space behind the first row. With second seats up, the capacity is 43 cu.ft., and if all seats are occupied, there is still 20 cubic feet remaining behind the third row. Properly equipped, the SUV can tow 4,500 pounds.

In the final edition, the 2020 Ford Flex will be available in three trim levels. The base model is SE and it comes with SYNC infotainment system as a standard feature. Other highlights of the entry-level version are 17-inch wheels and cloth seats. The low position offers easy access for cargo and passenger area.

The SEL adds larger wheels (18-inchers) and heated front buckets. The access is even easier thanks to the push-button start and other intelligent features. Top of the class Limited edition improves the safety with blind-spot monitor and cross-traffic warning. Leather seats are standard, as well as the unique 19-inch wheels.

Available colors for the 2020 Ford Flex are: Agate Black, Oxford White, Magnetic, Blue, Stone Gray, and Ingot Silver. If you are opting for a premium paintjob, then there are Burgundy Velvet, Ruby Red, and White Platinum. The floating roof in contrasting color is definitely the eye-catching detail. Two combinations are available here, with Mono-Chromatic and Agate Black Painted roof.

The entry-level SUV costs $31,000. That is a way-better offer than for any other full-size model. However, even its cheap price is not helping. SEL model costs $34,000 and the Flex Limited $39,000. Fully-loaded, the SUV can reach $50k.

2020 Ford Flex Replacement

The Blue Oval company didn’t release an official statement about the 2020 Ford Flex replacement. But, it is clear the discontinuation has something to do with the arrival of the Ford Bronco. The carmaker makes some space for the iconic vehicle since the interest is pretty high. The Bronco might not be as big as the Flex, but Ford needs production capacities.
