By sending the Durango SUV to the body-on-frame platform, Dodge will offer more room to its second seven-seat SUV. The 2020 Dodge Journey is preparing some novelties for the upcoming season, although some rumors are mentioning discontinuation. Well, the competition in the mid-size segment is really tough, but the Journey still has a lot to offer to its fans.

The vehicle comes with an interesting look. However, both exterior and interior are aging and the redesign is the only way that will save this nameplate. The specs of the model are respectable, with four-cylinder and V6 engines in the offer. Outside the US the SUV is offered with diesel units.

The vehicle is available in four trim levels. One of the major additions for the next model could be the SRT version. This will turn more attention to 2020 Dodge Journey and make it more attractive. However, the base price of the SUV is one of its main advantages and the vehicle is not too expensive because it uses a four-cylinder engine as the base unit.

Trim Levels: Crossroad, GT are Standard, SRT on the Way

The base 2020 Dodge Journey will be available as the SE Value Package. The US edition of the SUV is available with three rows of seats even for the entry-level model. In other markets, you will have to look for the SXT version to get the seven-seater configuration. Black roof rails and automatic LED headlights will remain standard for the new SUV. The four-cylinder engine is under the bonnet and it sends power only to front wheels.

The SE package upgrades the entry-level model with only a few features and the real deal comes with the Crossroad trim. Uconnect infotainment 8-inch screen is standard for this model, as well as the leather interior, power driver seat, and 3-zone automatic climate control.

The GT model is the most expensive one and its main upgrade is a V6 engine that delivers more power. Besides that, you can recognize the 2020 Dodge Journey GT by its 19-inch wheels and unique colors.

2020 Dodge Journey SRT

This badge is given for the most impressive and powerful units in the lineup. There are few exemptions (Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk), but the SRT is top of the range vehicle for Durango SUV. Still, the 2020 Dodge Journey is probably not getting the mean V8 drivetrain that is capable to produce nearly 500 hp. On the other hand, exterior and interior updates will make it more aggressive.

2020 Dodge Journey Specs, Gas Mileage, Towing Capacity

The base model is using a 2.4-liter engine and it is standard for the entire lineup, except the GT. A four-cylinder unit can produce 173 hp, which is not a class-leading number. Towing capacity is limited to 1,000 pounds, and even the fuel economy is not exceptional with 22 mpg combined.

So, most buyers will skip this one and opt for a GT trim with V6 engine and option to upgrade the drive to AWD. It also boosts outputs to 285 hp and 260 lb-ft. Maximum towing capacity is still below-par with only 2,500 pounds. The gas mileage pays the price and the V6 returns only 20 mpg combined, either with FWD or AWD.

Diesel Engines

Outside the US, the 2020 Dodge Journey is going to be available with a diesel engine. It is Fiat’s 2.0-l MultiJet with total outputs between 140 and 170 hp. The torque level is at 260 lb-ft. one of the advantages of this unit is a better fuel economy, which will combine return 35 mpg.

2020 Dodge Journey Redesign, Interior

The redesign of the 2020 Dodge Journey is not confirmed yet. But, the company is not denying it either. Well, the SUV definitely needs some upgrades to keep up the pace with rivals. For its size and price, it offers plenty of space inside the cabin. Total cargo space is 68 cubic feet behind front seats. A five-seat configuration leaves 37 cu.ft. and with all seats up, the cargo capacity drops to 10 cubic feet. Seats could slide back and forth, so you can provide more room for passengers.

The interior needs a serious revisit. The 2020 Dodge Journey is offering the base package of features, but the modern SUVs are competing to come with more equipment. Well, the price is better, but it is a clear indicator that you don’t have to expect too much.

2020 Dodge Journey Future

The 2020 Dodge Journey could be the last edition of the SUV. Rumors were reporting that the company wants to discontinue the vehicle due to poor sales. Outside the US, you can also find the rebadged version as Fiat Freemont. This one sells fine, and that could make FCA reconsider the future of the Journey.

The other solution is the redesign and the new generation with a fresh look, advanced infotainment and safety packages, and more powerful engines. A hybrid would also be a refresh for the entire FCA lineup, not only the mid-size SUV.
